What a great way to venture into the safari world of northern Tanzania. Arusha National Park is just an hour and a half drive from Arusha city, landing you in a rainbow world of mountain lakes, savannahs, and alpine moorlands.
It’s not the best-known national park but that just makes this versatile reserve much more accessible to those savvy enough to explore its colorful variety of landscapes. Where else can you climb an active volcano – Mt. Meru – go canoeing, explore a rainforest filled with elephants, buffalo, and baboons, and find yourself in the midst of the world’s largest population of giraffes… all in one day?
Mt. Meru – 2nd Highest Peak
Looking very much like the volcanic peak it is, Meru is an active volcano, but still safe. A hike up its slopes will bring into view elephants, giraffes, and antelope as you move through its varied ecosystems.
This second-highest summit in Tanzania usually has a clear window of visibility and offers views of its cousin, Kilimanjaro about 60 km (37 mi) distant.
Do You Canoe?
Ever been on a canoe safari? Here at Arusha, you can go canoeing on several algae-rich Momella lakes, passing through different shades of greens and blues. As you quietly glide over the smooth lake surfaces water birds will appear nearby such as cormorants, kingfishers, and punctuating the greens of your surroundings, brilliant pink flamingoes.
Not far off, peaking through the foliage, you’ll see the wanderings of giraffes, zebra, dik-dik, and warthogs.
There Is Even A Crater - Ngurdoto
You may have heard of Ngorongoro Crater (another of our Arusha day trips) but right here at Arusha Park, you can experience the smaller Ngurdoto Crater. Just 3.6 km (2.2 mi) in diameter and 100 m (328 ft.) deep, ringed by its own thick rainforest, you’ll be delighted to see elephants, warthogs, and antelope in this lush environment.
Adding to the adventure and the cacophony of the forest, listen and look for black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and baboons.
Want to See More?
And if all those landscapes and wildlife weren’t enough, we can take a break and visit the Ngurdoto Museum situated near the forest. Here you can admire the colorful collection of Arusha’s birds, wildlife, and even its insects.
