Karen Blixen Museum
We’ll swing by your hotel or place of your choice early – 8 am – to get the adventure started. Then we’re off to the base of the Ngong Hills, to the farm of legendary writer and romantic heroine, Karen Blixen. Under the pseudonym, Isak Dinesen, Blixen wrote about her life as a planter, adventuress, and mistress of hunter Denys Finch Hatton in the international bestseller, “Out of Africa”, later made into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.
Centered on the plantation grounds, Blixen’s classic manor house has been transformed into the Karen Blixen Museum, an homage to her life and of a special time and place in Africa. In these rooms, you’ll get up close to the colors and atmosphere of the colonial era, where Blixen wrote her memoirs and welcomed back Finch Hatton after his daring sojourns. Here’s an opportunity to touch an earlier world of romance and adventure.
David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage
Have you ever even heard of an elephant orphanage? What kinds of images come to mind? If you picture a parade of infinitely adorable baby elephants running for their giant baby bottles, you won’t be disappointed. Each of these orphaned babies has their own caregiver who tends to their needs, making sure they thrive and grow until they can be introduced back into their native habitat.
The Sheldrick Orphanage has been rescuing these tiny victims of poaching for over 40 years, creating best practices to ensure the physical and mental health of these cute, brilliant, and responsive babies.
We’ll stick around past feeding time to watch the youngsters jump into their bath – great muddy pools where the boisterous babies play and splash about. For extra fun (and to protect them from the sun) their keepers toss dirt to cover them. There’s so much cuteness here you’ll be smiling all day!
Lunch at The Garden
Soak up this perfect slice of the Africa experience amongst old trees, gardens, and floral blooms – the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden is a delightful time capsule where we’ll pause for lunch. Enjoy selections from the full menu as you take in the land and the hills as Blixen did one hundred years ago.
Giraffe Centre
Nairobi is busy with unique animal encounters – like the internationally known Giraffe Centre, where you’ll get to meet about a dozen endangered Rothschild’s Giraffes. Climb the platform here to feed the friendly long-necked creatures. And don’t be surprised if you get a giraffe kiss!
The Centre has become a haven and refuge for this threatened sub-species of giraffe. For decades, the animals have been saved, bred, and nurtured here while giving us all the opportunity to know their unique personalities. A big favorite of Kenyan schoolchildren, you’ll most likely be surrounded by dozens of happy children and their teachers, while you all stretch your necks to admire the towering, curious creatures.
Kazuri Beads
The Kazuri Beads story began when two single mothers filled with the spirit of artistic vision and self-determination created a tiny workshop, fashioning pottery, and beads to support themselves. In time their experiment attracted other determined young women wishing to better their lives through independence and creative means.
Stroll along the rows of brightly colored beads, view the artisans at work and you’ll quickly appreciate this brilliant workspace born of self-sufficiency. At the gift shop, you can support this growing enterprise of hundreds of women with souvenirs for yourself, friends, and family. The handcrafted pieces make meaningful gifts you’ll be moved to share.
What a fitting end to our ‘Into Africa’ Tour – a day filled with delightful animal meetings, epic history, and artistic pride. Now it’s time to hop into your safari vehicle for the ride back to your hotel or place of your choosing.
Africa Kenya Safaris invites you to join us for your personalized tour of unique Nairobi.
